Günzburg, Joseph Yozel
(1812-78)
   Russian banker and communal leader. He was born in Vitebsk and settled in Paris in 1857. In 1859 he founded the Joseph Yozel Günzburg Bank in St Petersburg. He was active in attempts to improve the situation of Russian Jewry. As a founder of the Society for the Promotion of Culture Among the Jews in Russia, he provided scholarships for Jewish youth to encourage higher education.
